Retirement and remote employment are different plans
The London consulate describes the non-working residence visa as permission to reside without carrying out gainful work or professional activity. Its guidance, dated 6 July 2026, says it is not a work permit. Financial resources are required, but satisfying that requirement does not create permission to work.
A household funded by savings and a household funded by ongoing consulting fees should therefore begin with different questions. Avoid selecting a route solely because its paperwork or headline financial requirement appears easier. First write down what each person expects to do during an ordinary working week.
A UK client does not make remote work irrelevant
The ministry’s international-teleworker FAQ expressly says a non-lucrative residence authorisation does not permit work, including the remote work discussed there. It warns against relying on work undertaken without the corresponding authorisation as the basis for a later application.
For a person who wants to keep serving clients from Spain, resolve the permission before starting the activity. Moving the customer, invoice address or payment account outside Spain is not an adequate substitute for checking the permitted work.
What the teleworker comparison should include
The consulate’s digital-nomad guidance describes remote employment or professional activity for businesses outside Spain. For self-employed applicants, work for a Spanish company is limited to twenty per cent of total professional activity. It also identifies qualification or experience requirements, evidence of the working relationship, and social-security documentation.
These are eligibility and evidence questions, not a blanket promise for everyone who owns a laptop. Ask the employer or contracting business whether it can supply the required documents and support the intended arrangement before committing to accommodation.
Build one workable family plan
Our suggested comparison has four columns: permitted work, evidence required, family needs and recurring cost. Put each adult’s intended activity on a separate line, and include a contingency if employment changes. Obtain immigration advice for the actual nationality and circumstances of each applicant.
Keep tax advice as a separate part of the same plan. This article compares immigration permissions and makes no claim that either visa guarantees a special tax regime. Recheck current consular instructions, forms and financial figures when applying; a dated webpage example is not a promise that today’s amount will remain valid.
