Before choosing a jurisdiction
Begin with the life you intend to lead, then test the same transactions in both countries. These questions organise an adviser discussion; they do not determine residence or eligibility.
- Reconcile every wallet and exchange, including DeFi, bridge, wrapping, stablecoin and NFT transactions; flag uncertain ownership changes for advice.
- Map UK residence and departure/split-year conditions before setting a disposal date.
- Ask whether the destination classifies each activity as investment, trading, business, employment or other income.
- Confirm treatment of pre-arrival gains, cost basis on arrival, loss carry-forwards, wealth taxes and reporting.
- Test the return-to-UK scenario, not just the intended first year abroad.
- Document the source of wealth and source of funds for banking and off-ramping; do not share private keys or seed phrases.
- Verify residence-permit and family conditions separately from tax residence and keep current provider tax-residence details.
Build a transaction and residence timeline
- Record purchase dates, quantities, fees, ownership changes and the valuation currency used for each tax year.
- Separate coins held before departure from assets acquired after the move.
- Include home, work, family and travel plans; assess split years and any dual-residence/treaty issue.
- Model a return to the UK, including the temporary non-residence rules, before a large disposal.
Compare the full cost of a favourable headline
Ask for a written explanation of the taxable base, the income category and the conditions behind a claimed exemption. Include annual wealth or holding taxes, social levies, minimum payments and professional or immigration costs where relevant. A low disposal rate does not establish that the overall move is affordable or suitable.
- Which tokens and transactions are covered?
- Is there a minimum holding period, an annual cliff threshold or a cap?
- Can losses be used, carried forward or shared with other income?
- Does a special regime require foreign-source income, a pension, qualifying work, prior non-residence or an election?
- What changes when the regime expires or the activity becomes a business?
Before moving funds or making a major disposal
Obtain coordinated UK and destination advice on your actual facts, identify the filing and payment deadlines and retain evidence of any election or advance ruling. Check the legal position again at the transaction date; the source-check date on this site is not a guarantee that a proposal has stayed unchanged.
- Keep a copy of the official rule and its commencement provisions.
- Ask how the destination treats pre-arrival cost basis and a later return or onward move.
- Update accurate tax-residence and identification information with service providers.
- Preserve ownership and source-of-funds records securely; never give an adviser your seed phrase.
